History and Legacy
Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University was originally established as Bhagalpur University on 12 July 1960. It was created to strengthen higher education and academic opportunities for students in Bhagalpur and surrounding regions.
In 1991, the university was renamed Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University in honour of Tilka Manjhi, remembered for his resistance against colonial rule and his contribution to the freedom struggle.
The university has developed into an important academic centre offering education in humanities, social sciences, science, commerce, law and education.
